A small white wolf lifted her paw slowly into the air, ready to strike. Instead of bringing down her long, sharp claws onto the back of an enemy, though, she jabbed it forcefully through a thick layer of ice. She stood up, and, using her snow-covered paws, began to dig a larger hole in the ice. She lowered herself into a crouch, satisfied with her work.
Eclipse, the wolf, was hungry. It was the dead of winter, and the Pack of Ice had a shortage of prey. Of course, they were used to having to work for food, but this winter was worse than any wolf could remember. Despite their thick fur, any wolf could tell they were too thin.
Of course, the Ice Pack members weren't the only ones suffering- the Fire Pack had their troubles. The small number of foxes that usually lived in their territory had multiplied, so it was a constant battle for prey.
But Eclipse didn't really care at all if the Fire Pack died out. It would make life easier, because the usually present feud would be gone, and the Ice Pack could focus more on feeding themselves.
Eclipse ruffled her fur. She closed her eyes, focusing all her energy into her other senses...
A soft breeze blew across the snow, rustling the tree branches. A small bird pecked around in the snow, looking for food to feed her family. Small mammals shifted in their dens beneath the snow on the shore of the frozen lake, oblivious to the potential predator that crouched a few yards away.
But sound wasn't the only thing Eclipse focused on. The smell of all the life around her gave her a sudden burst of energy. She felt so alive. Then, the smell she had been waiting for wafted out of the hole she had dug in the ice.
Eclipse's eyes flew open, and she pounced, springing out of the position she had been in. Her paw flew into the water, and with a cry of triumph, she pulled a wriggling fish out of the water, killing it in a bite. She howled again, shutting her eyes and turning her head to the heavens in happiness. She jumped into the air, acting like a pup, and as she fell back to the ground, she realized her mistake.
She hit the ground, and one of her front paws slipped on the edge of the hole. She yelped as both of her front paws plunged into the freezing water. Now her back paw was slipping.
Normally, she would have pulled herself out in an instant, with no trouble at all. But she hadn't eaten in a day, and she was extremely weak. What would happen to the Ice Pack if they lost their alpha? While she was weak, she was still one of the strongest wolves in both of the packs.
She let out one last feeble howl before plunging into the icy depths, hoping someone would hear her.
"Help!"
