Here is a history of how the packs came to be. You can use this as a reference when writing RPs, or just to know how the packs came to be as they are today. [Sorry this is so long. Please read it anyway, or at least skim it if you don't have time to read it all.]
Once, a long long time ago, there lived one giant, powerful pack of wolves. They lived on an island in a river that split the territory they ruled in half. The northern half and the southern half.
These two halves weren't very much different. The north, a little cooler, a little longer winter, the south a little warmer, a little harsher summer. Other than that, no major differences.
All the wolves in this pack, for the most part, lived harmoniously, defending their territory. The pack was known for miles and miles around. Any wolf outside the packs who didn't wish to join their ranks or be mercilessly slaughtered for trespassing gave them a wide berth.
As I said, these wolves got along for a time. That is, until the alpha and his close circle of advisors, decided it was best for the packs if they moved into the southern territory.
This was the beginning of the end of the pack.
After the alpha announced his decision, two different groups began to form in the pack. At first, the only difference was one group wanted to go, and the other group wanted to stay on the island. What was unusual about this conflict rather than others was that hardly a single wolf didn't care.
The alpha, being the alpha, didn't care very much that some wolves didn't want to move. With the help of his advisors, they moved to the southern territory.
With time, the two groups of wolves began becoming more and more different. One's coats were light colors, the other dark. The light-coated wolves had thick fur and muscles, while the darks' fur was thin, and they were built for speed. During this time the north and south regions also started becoming more drastic in their element; the north much colder, the south much hotter. The north grew to have snow three out of four seasons. The south got no snow at all anymore, even in the coldest of winters, and temperatures in the warmer season soared easily or 100 degrees fahrenheit.
The alpha, a black wolf by the name of Sombre (French for "dark"), noticed these changes. He also noticed that the thick-furred wolves seemed particularly rebellious. In his mind, more restrictions would put out the rebellions. He named the pack "The Pack of Fire", after the southern territory.
Boy, was he wrong.
This causes the thick-furred wolves to nickname themselves "The Pack of Ice", even though they were still a part of the Fire pack. Sombre was enraged.
But there was one wolf, a young male wolf by the name of Licht (German for "light"), who joined the Ice rebellion, but quietly so. Licht was a very soft spoken but dedicated wolf. He earned Sombre's trust before the rebellion, and soon became became beta. He was the only "ice" wolf Sombre could trust. The alpha was soon even trying to get him to come to the fire pack side of the arguments, despite his physical differences. Licht politely turned him down, but said he would still serve him, as long as it wasn't against any of the wolves in the pack.
During the most intense times of the rebellion, Licht learned of the treacheries of Sombre and his advisors. Licht was soon secretly forming his own circle of followers. He actively joined the rebellion, though in secret. Sombre still thought of him as a close follower.
Licht, with the aid of his followers, began plotting an overthrow. He planned his attempt on a stormy night, in mid-autumn. He had all of the rebel ice wolves on his side. His plan was to overtake the pack and move them back onto the island, hoping it would fix these troubles, and they could go back to being one all powerful pack. But that would involve getting rid of Sombre and his followers.
After most wolves went to bed that night, Licht stationed ice wolves so they surrounded the entire pack camp. Then, with his close followers, he stormed into Sombre's den, expecting to be able to murder him in his sleep.
But there was a traitor among Licht's followers who had warned the alpha that there was a threat on his life by the now powerful beta, his trusted Licht. So Sombre was ready with a full squad of his strongest, healthiest wolves.
A great fight broke out which soon involved all of the wolves in the massive pack. Many were killed. When all other wolves could no longer fight, Sombre and Licht held a great duel, a traditional duel over leadership of the pack. The prize for winning: alpha of the pack. And for the loser: death. That was the way it had always been. One wolf always died, or fled the pack, never to return. There was no other way out.
No wolf is quite sure what exactly happened that night. Some say the two great wolves came to an agreement. Others say the gods spoke to them. One thing is for sure, though: after that, there were two packs.
It is believed to have gone like this:
However they reached their decision of dividing the pack, it wasn't what either wolf wanted. Both wanted the pack to remain one, because that would mean less fighting over prey and territory, not to mention more power for the prevailing wolf. But in any case, Licht led those ice wolves out of that camp that night, whether in triumph or defeat is your guess. They started their own pack in the northern territory. Fire wolves tried to stop them, but the two groups were so equal fire couldn't quench ice that night.
So, that is how there came to be two packs in these wonderful territories, each suited perfectly to their habitat. And while you may say Sombre was the evil one in this story, Licht's plans weren't much less evil. He wanted his wolves to be in control, even if it involved killing Sombre. But we can't hold a grudge against our ancestors, for without them, we wouldn't be here today, like we are.
