Sorra felt her lungs quiver before she coughed painfully. Her stomach clenched in rebuttal. As if contagious, a low cough sounded from across the clearing. She peeled her eyes open, white light shining bright in her eyes. She swallowed a wimper that had begun to rise in her throat. Wolves romped about the camp, grooming, fighting, playing. The season had changed, but the pack had not yet recovered from winter. Ribs still jutted from dull pelts and the prey had not returned. And had not returned. And not returned. There was supposed to be an abundance of food now, what had happened? Sorra's tired eyes flitted to the sunrise. Instead of a bloom of color, light and sounds raising in the cool morning air, the sun's warmth was screened by clouds, the breeze grainy and rough on her nose. She opened her mouth and allowed the air to flow over her tongue and into her mouth. Someting unpure was in the air. She examined the sunrise again, considering the clouds. It's not going to rain, Sorra thought. Maybe it was smoke from a fire carried by winds from a distant place. Sorra turned her eyes to the throng of wolves passing by in from of her. They moved as if underwater, paddling across the ground like they were fighting rapids. Morale and strength is low... It would be a bad time to recieve an attack. she thought. A cough burst from her throat unexpectedly, over-over. Ugh, what a lousy season. She shut her eyes again.

<<This is it, Timberrrr! ;D>>
What peculiar weather, Tasha thought as she regarded the grayish morning clouds. She rolled over, eyes narrowing. Her pups had not stirred since the earliest signs of gestation, so she was worried. I hope this fatigue and sickness that has left me so drained doesn't take any toll on my beautiful pups.
Tasha let herself fill with delight. "What a wonderful day!" she cooed to her stomach. She gave her belly a joyful lick and settled into daydreaming contentment. They are due soon. What can I name them? Hmm.... I will need to ask Velox. Names were very important, so it needs to be a good choice. With the weather so fine, it would be fortunate for them to be born on this day. I could name one for the sun that warms my fur, one for the wind that blows the leaves and one for the mysterious and dark, yet beautiful clouds that cover the sky. "Yes. A beautiful day." As if the moment couldn't be more perfect, Tasha felt a tiny stirring from inside of her, the first in weeks. Proof that her pups were still well and happy.

Blaze's rampant, preoccupied thoughts bounced around in the cavern of his mind like echos. Today I must break the news to the rest of my pack. I was only last night that he along with his beta travelled to ice pack territory to forge and alliance against the growing environmental concerns, whose source was from upriver. Suspecting it was something to do with the water, all precautions had to be taken if the packs were to survive.
Blaze regarded Velox with a tip of his head, as he walked slowly past. He was feeling the same anxiety. The had to announce the news. How would the pack react?
Together, Velox and Blaze sauntered up onto a high rock, which overlooked the camp clearing. Slowly, curious eyes drew to the top of the rock, until all eyes rested on the alpha and beta. Everything was still. Everything was silent.
Blaze nervously cleared his throat and braced himself for the impending reaction. "As you all know, strange things have been happening... The prolonged famine, the strange weather, and sickly trees. In addition, we had an incident when Sorra caught a two-headed fish." Blaze flicked his tail to Sorra, sitting on her haunches below. "These happenings have.... given me much concern... and so it called for a change in action. This change will no doubt, effect every living wolf, and even those to come." Tasha looked on with worried eyes.
The clearing, the trees, even the wind held its breath.
"The fire pack has allied with the ice pack."

Gasps rose from all around the clearing. AN ALLIANCE?? With the enemy??? Commotion built, red as the clouds. "How do you know that they won't betray us?!" Someone shouted.
This was indeed, outrageous. What were Blaze and Velox thinking? The ice and fire pack have been enemies for as long as memory itself. It was crazy to think they could ever work together to reach a common goal. The leaders were provoking an uprising in their descision. Sorra only sighed and watched the flames and madness consume the wolves of the fire pack like poison.
"Why weren't we told about this?" Rip-wracking coughs split from lips as voices were strained. "How can they help us? They're traitors!"
"SILENCE!" a voice rang above their heads. The pack turned to see who had spoken.

There was a long beat of suspense. Blaze clenched his jaw tight, and tried to keep his head high. Murmurs began to bob through the crowd like rabbits from hill to hill. His heart constricted- his reputation... was this the beginning of his demise, everything he's worked for? Blaze could only watch the world below him melt at his feet. Now the murmurs were shouts of rage and bewilderment. His noble pack thrashed and barked, blind and not seeing. Blaze could only expect this was what would happen, but why couldn't they see? This is what would save them!
Hopelessness crashed on Blaze's shoulders. The frenzy leaped, toungues of fire, seeming to nip at the alpha and beta's feet. He needed to keep his pride and dignity, not let his underpackmen tear it to shreds. HE was the alpha. THEY couldn't change that.
His feet firmly planted onto the rock, he took a deep breath and prepared to bellow. As he opened his jaws, his breath was taken by another voice, echoing...
"SILENCE!"
Blaze had not spoken. Who said that??

Having followed Blaze to the rock, Velox was reluctant to climb up, it was Blaze's job to tell the pack of the alliance. While Blaze was saying his piece, Velox decided to climb another tree. He had gotten above the rock when Blaze ended, and the pack started raging.
"SILENCE!"
Velox was mad... "I don't like this any more than you do, but do you see the blight that has engulfed the camp?!? Let alone the whole forest that has both packs stranded inside?!?!?!? Wolfs are dying, many are already dead!!! We must find out the reasons for this, and for that we need help."
Out of breath, Velox decided that he had said enough. Wait... They hadn't heard of my tree climbing yet do they...

Blaze whipped about, finally locating Velox, in a nearby tree. Screwing his eyes in the morning sunlight, Blaze said: "Velox is right. This is what is best for our future. Now, you can fight this change, or you can embrace it. Whatever happens, this is what is going to happen. Stand with us, or leave."
A terrible, deafening hush fell over the crowd and trees. The breeze was still. Eyes darted here and there, scanning for those who dared to leave. Who would cling to the old ways, and who would accept the new? It was all decided in this moment, now.
Blaze peered at Velox, seated in the tree. What a queer moron. Wolves in trees, whoever heard of such a thing?

Zage stared with a blank expression as his fellow pack mates fought and argued. The news has struck him, but instead of speaking up, he thought to himself.
The ice pack. Our enemies since time began. Why would our leader choose to be their allies? Surely we could survive without their help...
His thoughts trailed on, his mouth turning into a snarl and his tail swished side to side slowly. "What if they betray us? What if they kill us? We can't trust our own enemy!"
Zage stood up and walked around in a circle, thinking to himself. Everything we have worked for. All our efforts on staying alive. This could all be torn away...

Sorra was deeply irked. Blaze and Velox must be very afraid to make a decision like this. A spidery cough crawled up her throat, and she pawed her pain into the hard ground. An image of the fish flashed behind her clenched eyelids, serving as a grim reminder of all of t he recent environmental oddities. Sorra turned her muzzle to the sky, which was still cloudy, with shafts peeking through as the clouds roiled overhead.
Below, the controversy that was erupting seemed to match the weather, bodies thrashing and growling in discontempt. Sorra expected something like this to come from breaking such news. Unlike many of her comrades, however, this proposal didn't bother her. The ice and fire share the same earth, yes? Then why do they not coexist peacefully? It would be a beneficial move, if the alliance could be carried out.
Watching her pack tear apart before her eyes, Sorra knew that it would not be possible.

Ricochet gazed around at his pack, which was in turmoil at the news. The sinking feeling that said his pack wouldn't be able to unite with the pack of ice stung deeply. He could see clearly that alliance was the wisest move; why couldn't his packmates say the same?
He turned away to see his mate, Tournel, with that same desperation in her eyes, yet there was something more. He would have to say it was sorrow. Sorrow for their lost pups? Sorrow for the situation? He nuzzled her gently.
"What troubles you?" he asked quietly.
She looked up and met his eyes. "This can't be good. I see that lives will be lost unnecessarily in all of this. Innocent lives." She bowed her head.
He knew what she meant: the lives of pups. If pups of either pack were killed, Ricochet knew that his mate would be infuriated and ready-to-fight. Just as he would be. But that had to be prevented. Both he and his mate would do anything to prevent that.
"Blaze," he whispered. After a moment of looking, he found the alpha, sitting and discussing urgently with Velox. Ricochet quickly made his way over to Blaze.
"Excuse me, Blaze," he began, getting the alpha's attention. "But I want to let you know something." The alpha looked interested. He's interested in and hope of a solution to this mess, Ricochet realized, with a hint of sadness.
"I can't yet offer you ideas, but I can offer this: my devotion. I know what you're doing is the right thing, that much is clear to me. I pledge myself to the packs. Not to you in particular, but to these packs and the survival of them both. Tell me what must be done."

Ricochet bowed his head near Blaze's ear and spoke in a low voice, "I can't yet offer you ideas, but I can offer this: my devotion. I know what you're doing is the right thing, that much is clear to me. I pledge myself to the packs. Not to you in particular, but to these packs and the survival of them both. Tell me what must be done." His words were honest, and his eyes sincere. It brought some comfort to Blaze for him to know that at least one wolf understood and supported him. And not just him, but the entirety of the fire pack as well as the ice. "Your devotion is all I need, Ricochet." Blaze murmured back. "But if we are going to go through with this, we need the hearts of all of the pack to come together."
Blaze turned to his pack before him. He stood and waited as the crowd calmed down enough for him to speak. "What I am asking for you to do, I understand, is not easy. We and all of our ancestors before have had bestowed on us an inherent hatred of the ice pack, and it is not as simple to change our ways on the turn of a whim. We are opposites in the bodies we bear, the prey we hunt, and the way we live. But in these differences, you must see: we are more alike than different. So, let us not be blinded by our differences, but see the similarities of our common goals and to the means by which our differences can be resolved. Because in the long run, the main traits we share is that we all live in the same world, we all breathe the same air, and we all hope the best for the future of our generations to come. "What I dream of is an life full of of balance, purity and happiness with the absence of the current troubling subject matter at hand, which may only be solved by our willingness or unwillingness of coexist. The happiness I seek is not a matter of intensity but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony, and he key to happiness lies in the initiative taken to make a better tomorrow by creating our own order to the chaos which has been created. Tomorrow is coming, and the only way I see to make it is for us to forget our differences with the ice pack so that we may achieve a balance, a balance which right now, our lives may depend upon. Our problems arise in that one has to find a balance between what the members of the pack need from you and what you need for yourself. Don't pass the bridge that your kinsmen have passed. Only the strong survive. To be strong, we need the help of the ice pack in this alliance more for anything else. For our pack, for our future! The decision is now, and the decision is yours. I chose what what I felt what was best for my pack's survival. What do you choose?"

Ricochet held his breath. Blaze had spoken, and spoken well. But would his powerful words affect the opinion of the pack? If they had made up their mind, there was a good chance nothing would sway them.
Ricochet stood there, for what felt like an eternity, thinking. He saw his uncertainty reflected in Blaze's eyes. Neither of them were sure what to think, but all they could do was wait for a response from the pack.
Finally, the answer to Blaze's question came. First, in the form of one wolf, then two, then five, then, before they knew it, the whole pack.
The pack of fire had decided their fate.
