Lumiere blinked her eyes open slowly, a soft stream of light having just shifted over her. Memories of that night and the truce with the Fire pack washed over her. She shut her eyes again and tried to fall back asleep, wanting to push away her duties and obligations, which involved breaking the news to her pack.
Try as she may, she couldn't fall back asleep. She knew she had to tell her pack soon, lest they find out from the fire pack. This was the second sunrise since that event, and the alpha felt bad about not telling them before.
She stretched her limbs out and let out a long yawn. Stress had prevented her from sleeping the past two nights: a sign that the time had come to do something.
The ice pack alpha strode out of her private den, into the crisp morning air. Most of the pack was already up and going about their business, whether it be returning from an early hunting trip or just enjoying the beautiful day. Lumiere shuddered when she thought of how her news could upset them.
Several wolves nodded to her in respect as she passed them on her way to the boulder from which she liked to make announcements to her pack. She forced a smile to them, but she knew it didn't reach her eyes. One of the elder wolves seemed to notice, but kept it to himself. He'll realize soon enough, she thought bitterly.
Lumiere reached the rock, and let out a low howl from the top. Her packmates immediately stopped what they were doing and looked up at her. Always so loyal, she thought, but will it stay that way?
"My, what a beautiful spring day it is!" she started, nervous. "The news I bring may seem less beautiful to you, but I can only assure you that I made this decision with the pack's best interest in mind."
That last part seemed to put the wolves on alert. What could be news that would require such an opening from their alpha?
Lumiere paused for a second, but knew that if she didn't say it now, she never would be able to.
"The pack of ice is now in an alliance with the pack of fire."
